Unlocking a device allows consumers to move it from one network to another compatible network. The process varies by device and provider — a provider may unlock automatically after certain conditions, send instructions on request, or complete it in-store. Some phones are sold with built-in software that prevents them from working on a different carrier. Unlocking removes those technical limitations, although it does not resolve every technological compatibility issue between networks.

Yes. On February 11, 2014, CTIA — The Wireless Association adopted six standards on mobile wireless device unlocking into the CTIA Consumer Code for Wireless Service. All signatories implemented every standard on or before February 11, 2015. SIERRAUNLOCK models its own policies on these six principles.

Devices are often sold with subsidies (discounts) in exchange for a required service-plan commitment, or under a device financing plan. Most agreements include an early-termination penalty. Locking software ensures the device stays active on the selling provider's network for the agreed period or usage, protecting that subsidy arrangement.

Unless you purchased a phone specifically sold as "unlocked," you should presume it is locked to a specific provider. This applies whether you bought it from a wireless provider, a retail outlet, in person, online, or through a third party. A few providers do not generally lock the devices they sell. Bring the device to us and we will check its status honestly before quoting.

Yes. Tablets and other mobile devices with cellular connectivity can be locked to networks. The CTIA commitment covers phones and tablets. Always check with your service provider (or with us) to see whether your device is locked and which terms apply.

You should speak with your provider to understand your agreement's terms and the provider's unlocking policy. The six CTIA principles are fully implemented by all signatories: participating providers publish a clear, concise, readily accessible unlocking policy on their websites and respond to unlock requests pursuant to that policy. Where the provider route is slow or unclear, SIERRAUNLOCK assists with legal unlocking options.

Postpaid: after you fulfill the applicable service contract, device installment plan, or pay the early termination fee — and remain in good standing. Prepaid: no later than one year after initial activation, consistent with the provider's reasonable time, payment, or usage requirements.

It depends on your provider. Some automatically unlock devices remotely at eligibility (in which case postpaid customers may not receive a separate notice); others require a formal request. Prepaid customers are notified at point of sale, at eligibility, or via the provider's website policy. Under the commitment, participating providers act within two business days of a request: unlock, provide instructions, initiate an OEM request, or give an easily understood explanation of denial or needed extra time.

Participating providers will not charge customers or former customers additional fees to unlock an eligible device. Providers may charge a reasonable fee to non-customers / non-former customers. Where SIERRAUNLOCK performs a technical unlock service for you, our own transparent quote is given before any work begins — no hidden charges.

Yes. If you are deployed internationally or receive orders for international deployment, participating wireless service providers will unlock your device upon verification of your deployment papers. Bring your papers to us and we will guide the process.

Yes. Participating providers do not have to unlock devices for customers or former customers who are not in good standing, or who have not satisfied the service contract, device financing plan, or applicable early termination fee. Contact your provider to understand your specific terms.

No. Network technology (GSM, LTE, CDMA, etc.) varies globally. Your device technology must be compatible with the target network. Devices are optimized for the networks they were sold for; on a compatible network some features may not work optimally, or at all. We always verify band compatibility before you pay.

Whether locked or unlocked, check with your provider before travelling — mobile networks differ country to country. Even where voice works, data or text messaging might not. Research roaming rules and rates in advance to avoid lack of service or unexpectedly high charges. Ask our team for a compatibility check before your trip.

The DMCA generally prohibits bypassing access controls on copyrighted materials. Cell phones often contain access controls that "lock" the phone to a particular network, and the DMCA generally prohibits unauthorized removal or modification of those controls. This is exactly why SIERRAUNLOCK only performs authorized, legal unlocks with proof of ownership — never unauthorized bypassing.
